The Zutons
/
Formed in Liverpool in 2002, The Zutons quickly distinguished themselves with a sound that was simultaneously eclectic and unmistakably their own. Blending elements of indie rock, Northern soul, funk, and even touches of jazz and psychedelic pop, their music stood out for its quirky rhythms, angular guitar lines, and catchy, sing-along choruses. Lead guitarist and vocalist Dave McCabe brought a distinctive voice that could pivot from raw urgency to melodic sweetness, while Abi Harding’s saxophone added an unexpected and vibrant layer, giving the band a signature edge in the mid-2000s UK music scene.
Their debut album, Who Killed… The Zutons? (2004), introduced fans to this rich tapestry of influences, from the punchy, infectious grooves of “Pressure Point” to the soulful storytelling of “You Will You Won’t.” With their follow-up, Tired of Hanging Around (2006), The Zutons refined their sound, creating polished, hook-laden tracks like “Valerie” and “Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love?” that blended tight pop sensibilities with their characteristic eccentricity.
Deltasonic head Alan Wills initially hesitated to sign the band, skeptical of McCabe’s previous musical projects: “I’d heard other bands Jay had played in and I thought they were all rubbish.” However, the persistence of The Coral’s James Skelly, combined with the band’s bedroom demos, revealed a musical chemistry and inventiveness that couldn’t be ignored. The Zutons’ ability to merge unconventional instrumentation, playful melodies, and tight rhythmic grooves ultimately won over Deltasonic, cementing their place as one of the label’s most innovative acts.
The Zutons’ sound is both instantly accessible and richly layered, full of surprises and energy. They exemplify Deltasonic’s commitment to artists who push boundaries while remaining rooted in memorable, irresistible songwriting.
